The Masons' Micro Hydro Story
The Masons installed their micro hydro turbine because of the increasing cost of oil, electricity and hardwood logs - not to mention the effort it takes to chop them!
With five grand children, climate change is a real concern for the Masons and by harnessing the power at the Ironmacannie Mill they are minimising their environmental impact.
“It is giving us great pleasure and satisfaction that Ironmacannie Mill, which from 1640 until 1950 ground the grain from the surrounding farms, is now able to produce green electricity for the Mill House. The existing weir and millpond have been utilised to send the water down past the waterwheel to the burnside turbine, where it generates clean renewable power. The one downside is that, while we don’t need any sun or wind, we do require rain!”
The Masons joined the Home generation scheme as they were keen to get paid for the renewable electricity they generate. Good Energy pays them 15p for every unit they produce, even the ones they use on site.
